Atman

Atman (Hindi: आत्मन्) is a term used in Indian philosophy. It describes the individual self, eternal essence of the mind and is often translated as soul. The originally meaning is breath of Life. It is the core of our self that can only be seen when you don’t think of the physical shell of the humans. The Hindus say that Atman is in everything: It is in every human being, in every animal, every plant and objects. For objects Atman is different, since they don’t have a chance to reach Nirvana, but they still think that every object has a soul.
The principle of the Atman is based on each individual personality; it is an unchanging, eternal essence, which influent the human. To translate a word Atman is almost impossible. The term self or soul is quite correct but incomplete. A Hindu understands his deep core as a part of God, a god in itself.
The goal of Hindus is to recognize the Atman, to reach enlightenment and escape in this way the cycle of rebirth. When you reached Nirvana your Atman will be released of your body.
